About Us

Since the 1980s, the Canaryville Improvement Association (CIA) has fostered partnerships with elected officials and public safety leaders to improve access to essential resources and community development; establish trusted relationships with police; advocate for better parks and recreation; hold businesses and absentee property owners accountable; and create a strong neighborhood network.

We have successfully fought for a public library and park, helped elect one of our members to the Chicago Police District Council, and mobilized neighbors to help shut down illegal businesses and problem properties, among other community improvement initiatives.

Nearly four decades later, CIA continues its work in the spirit of advocacy, volunteerism and unity to build on our successes, create a safer community, address issues affecting the neighborhood, and attract new businesses, resources and community development.

Our commitment to building a healthy, thriving community is stronger than ever because Canaryville deserves better.

About Canaryville

Canaryville is part of Chicago’s New City community area. It is said that Canaryville got its name from the large number of birds that populated the region in the bustling Union Stockyards around the end of the 19th century.

Today, Canaryville is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, bordering Bridgeport and Back of the Yards. It stretches from Pershing on the north, Halsted on the west, 49th Street on the south and Normal on the east. Canaryville is located in the 11th and 15th wards.
